9 years ago, on the heels of months of fighting mono, daily fevers, endless fatigue, mouthfuls of ulcers and a host of acute illnesses, we thought we’d finally landed on the culprit of pneumonia and an ear infection to turn things around. We had no idea it was just the beginning. And these would be the simple days.

This day in Tate’s history….

3 years ago Tate was on day 39 of her admission that led into bone marrow transplant.

1 year ago she was on day 14 of an admission after receiving her intrathecal pain pump.

Today is day 7 of an admission that started out as a “simple” blood infection and has turned into anything but.

As white counts and Tate’s symptoms are headed in the wrong direction, blood cultures were started all over again today. It’s unlikely they’ll grow no matter what’s in her blood as she already has a week of antibiotics in her system. But it seems something is going on.

We do know Tate will be on 4-6 weeks of IV antibiotics to try to clear the infection from the blood clot. Her Central line cannot be replaced until they’re certain the infection pocket from the clot is gone, likely a month or more from now. However, there is debate if that will even be safe as vessel trauma could create more clots.

She’s on blood thinner (Lovenox shots) twice daily very likely indefinitely. There is great concern over her developing future clots as she is positive for anti phospholipid syndrome (APS) and she has additional risk factors. We were told again today how lucky we were to incidentally find this clot as this is usually found after mass clots are discovered through a catastrophic event. The immediate goal is to prevent future clots, and get rid of this infection.
