Today was uneventful. It was a short night with lots of interruptions. Tate slept most of the day away. A combination of her baseline fatigue, a short night and her body working extra hard to keep up with the bleeding. And amazingly her body is hanging in there. Incredible to think that a few short months ago she was still getting blood transfusions at her baseline and now her body is keeping up with this arterial bleed. GO new bone marrow!! I’ll spare you photos of just how much blood is being lost, but the visual is striking!
We may get to go home in the morning. The bonus of having proved a competent caregiver capable of managing iv fluids and all Tate’s accompanying medical needs, means we can do a lot of the observation and cover fluid needs at home with trips in for ultrasounds and labs. This is a positive but sometimes I want to pull a blanket over my head to hide from the responsibility and “just” be mom. But last night, Drew and TJ and Megan flew in, so being all home together will be the best. Praying Tates labs hold steady overnight despite the continuous bleeding and her team will agree to discharge tomorrow.
The discussion around surgery to stop this today landed on “as a last resort,” as Tate would lose part of her kidney function. Her filtration rate (kidney function) is already lower than what is seen in a healthy kidney, so we will give her body a chance to heal this on its own and preserve what we can.
Thanks for all the love and prayers!
