Harder conversations are always easier when had with providers that you’ve known and loved for years and know what you need before you walk through the door.
Tate saw her rheumatologist today. During Tate’s admission last week, the medical team in consult with inpatient rheumatology made a referral back to oncology due to Tate’s poor trending counts. In all honesty, my medical mom gut had already spoken those words in my own head. To have them confirmed without a conversation wasn’t a time I wanted my intuition to be correct.
Today’s conversation surrounded 3 possible reasons for her poor counts: meds, rheumatic disease, recurrent or secondary bone marrow disease. Currently, the first two don’t make as much sense due to reasons too complex to explain here. Bone marrow is of highest suspicion and definitely the most concerning. We are though, hoping that a bone marrow biopsy will show all is fine and lead us to dig in another direction. No matter the cause, Tate currently is at very high risk for continued systemic infections.
Travel right now isn’t ideal, and really Tate should be staying put pursuing the above. But our loved Dr. Moore is coming up with a hospital route plan and sending us with an emergency summary. A visit with Dr. Lia today too and we were reminded that there’s connections for us all the way to Milwaukee Children’s. So we are going with a plan to enjoy celebrating every moment of TJ and Meg and all our beloved family and friends.
This day was full of Olympic festivities at the hospital. Children’s has 3 Paralympic employees who were sharing medals today and there was free Kona ice! A fun and inspiring end to the day.
